With the next group run of CLEANSE! kicking-off just a couple of days from now, I thought I would get a little more personal and share exactly why I choose to juice cleanse throughout the year.
But before I get to that, I want to address a couple of things that I sometimes hear people say:
'Our body is perfectly capable of cleansing all year round without the need to do any kind of "detox".'
My answer to that: I think that's a little overly simplistic, not to mention untrue. If it were true then there would be no intestinal blockages to be cleared, no heart bypasses required, no suppositories needed. You get the picture. Yes, the body is AMAZING at handling a LOT of stress, toxic load and unhealthy foods and drink, however, it's not a machine. It's a very beautiful and complex living organism that has its limits when it comes to what it can and will put up with, and it has certain thresholds. And so while it can deal with a surprisingly large amount of unwanted toxicity, having to deal with this day after day, month after month, year after year is going to lead to issues sooner or later. It's only a matter of time.
The second thing I hear:
'This whole juice cleanse thing is just a silly fad; there's no legitimacy to it.'
My response: Do some people juice cleanse because they think it's cool? Absolutely! But there are many many people like myself who do it for completely different reasons, which I'll come to in a moment. As for the legitimacy, personally I don't need a study or science to tell me what works when it's blindingly obvious. Having said that, there are plenty of studies that show that cleaning up ones diet has a very real and marked effect on overall health along with specific health issues. On that note, if you've not yet watched "Simply Raw Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days" then run, don't walk! I am so happy I got to be a part of this real-life documentary when it was made many years ago and Dr Gabriel Cousens is a living legend. I watched it again the other day and it gave me goosebumps to see these people free of diabetes in 30 days or less. It's an absolute must-see. OK, so that's my thoughts on the couple of things I hear the most about juice cleansing. Now let's get personal.
MY CLEANSING HISTORY & WHY I CLEANSE
I have been experimenting with cleansing on and off since I first got into raw food 29 years ago. I tried water fasting, liquid cleanses of all kinds, mono eating, commercial cleanses and eating 100% raw vegan for over 5 years straight (save 3 weeks during pregnancy).
Some might say, 'surely if you're eating healthy you don't need to get into all of that as well?' I would say, 'It depends what you want. Do you want to just feel healthy and better than most people eating a standard western diet, or do you want to feel amazing?'
If you want to feel amazing, then in my experience a juice cleanse is what will take you there.
And personally, I want to feel amazing every day of my life, so that's why I do what I do.
HOW CLEANSING HAS CHANGED FOR ME
Since my mid-forties I have become much more into organisation, routines and structure to create predictable and regular results in my life. When it comes to diet, working with the seasons, working with the calendar and creating an 'event' around cleansing has become incredibly valuable and important to me. Not only does it prevent 'forgetting' to cleanse, but it's also a lot more fun doing it with others and supporting them to get started or go deeper with their own cleanse journey. It's almost like a party week! So doing a juice cleanse every 3 months is now just part of how I live my life. It's 1-3 weeks every 12 weeks and it ensures that at the grand old age of 48, I still feel like a teenager and watch my face and body de-age day-by-day over that 7-21 days that I juice. It literally never ceases to amaze me.
I know I'm not alone in this, so here are some other reasons I recommend a cleanse that you may or may not be familiar with:
